What do you do when consequences just don’t work?

You’ve taken away screen time. You’ve removed privileges. You’ve tried increasingly serious consequences—and your child does the same thing.

It’s frustrating, and it can leave you wondering whether you’re being too lenient, too strict, or simply missing something.

As a clinical psychologist and mom of six grown children, I’ve learned that when consequences repeatedly fail, there’s often a reason—and adding more punishment may not be the answer.
